Boylston

Boylston founded 1786
Boylston was originally the Second Parish of Shrewsbury, which formed in 1743 and hired Ebinezer Morse as its first minister. Morse was a Harvard scholar who studied law in Worcester and was also well-read in medicine. He served not only as the town's spiritual leader but was also a political force. The town broke away from Shrewsbury and incorporated in 1786. In the late 1800s, more than 4,800 acres were taken for the creation of Wachusett Resevoir.


Government: Open town Meeting the first Monday in May; Three-member board of Selectmen.
Villages: East Section, Morningdale (Post Office), Straw Hollow.
Distances: Boylston is located 45 miles west of Boston and 5 miles northeast of Worcester.
Facts:
  • John B. Gough, a leader in the Temperance Movement, lived in Boylston from 1848-1886. Memorabilia from his life and the lives of other famous residents are displayed at the Hisorical Society Museum.
  • The Gough Estate at Hillside is on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered one of the finest mansions in MA
  • The town of Boylston leases the Historic Center Building to the Historical Society to use as its headquarters and museum. It was built as a Town Hall in 1830 with a grant from the benefactor Ward Nicholas Boylston.
Medical Facilities: Limited number of local doctors and dentists in town. Excellent hospitals and clinics in the adjacent city of Worcester.

Golf: Cyprian Keyes Golf Club is rich in both history and acclaim.
Opened in 1997, Cyprian Keyes Golf Club was built from an estate dating back to 1734, the facility is open to the public for golf, instruction, dining and functions. Cyprian Keyes offers 27-holes of golf with an award winning 18-hole championship course and a fun, yet challenging, 9-hole Par-3. The facility boasts a renowned golf school, acclaimed golf shop and one of the largest club fitting centers in New England.
