Sara McDermott, the founder of PictureIt Vacations, has found a way to combine her talents and interests in her new company. Sara first came to Alaska in the summer of 2007 to work as an entertainment specialist for the Klondike Gold Dredge in Skagway. While there, she produced their new script, revamped some of their old show ideas, and acted as a tour guide. She also developed a deep passion for the beauty and mystery of Alaska, and an understanding of the tourism business.

Day after day, she watched as visitors to this great state rushed to get their pictures on either her tour or the tours she took on her days off. Unless a stranger offered a hand, at least one person in each traveling party wound up playing the part of ‘picture taker’ and was left out of all the shots. If there was wildlife, people scrambled with their cameras, missing the moment to enjoy that special sighting and usually not getting a great picture anyway. Finally, more than one person admitted to Sara that, although they were taking hundreds of pictures, they probably wouldn’t have the time or the energy to organize them when they got back home. Those without digital cameras confessed they still had undeveloped pictures from vacations taken years earlier. |
In the meantime, Sara, a former newspaper photographer from Philadelphia, had discovered a shutterbug’s paradise in Alaska’s endless mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers. Diverse tours and outdoor adventures also offered a wealth of photo opportunities. After one month and over a thousand pictures, as Sara was organizing her memories into slideshows and scrapbooks, it dawned on her how much the travelers she met every day would appreciate having just those things when they returned from their trips – beautiful displays of their journey, without having to do any of the work. PictureIt Vacations was born. |
