The Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) provides a revolutionary means by which
the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps access more than 70 percent of
the world's shorelines. Considered the cornerstone of U.S.
amphibious forces, LCAC can traverse water, snow, marsh, ice,
tundra and sand. Initially used as a troop and equipment transporter,
LCAC has evolved into a multi-mission craft with additional
roles such as mine hunting and sweeping and humanitarian relief.

U. S. Navy LCAC delivered relief aid to Indonesia survivors of the December,
2004 earthquake and tsunami. Several cities were virtually
inaccessible by land. Sailors aboard U.S. ships were quoted
several times that the "unbelievable" lift capacity
of the LCAC's and their ability to get to shore quickly were
making a huge difference to relief efforts on the island and
thereby saving lives. LCACs delivered water purification plants,
medical supplies and other essential equipment to the disaster
areas. |
